Description

Fraud is often viewed as an issue for auditors, investigators, and compliance teams. However, after spending the past year rotating through Internal Audit, Accounting, Treasury/Credit & Collections, and FP&A, I've learned that fraud prevention begins long before a formal investigation.

This session explores lessons learned while transitioning from the classroom into the corporate environment, including developing a fraud mindset, recognizing fraud risks hidden within everyday business processes, and understanding the importance of organizational culture in fraud prevention. Attendees will hear practical examples involving customer fraud, business email compromise (BEC), check fraud, and employee expense reimbursement schemes, along with techniques such as data analytics, trend analysis, keyword searches, exception testing, and leveraging existing organizational tools to identify potential fraud indicators.

Whether you're a student, new professional, or experienced practitioner, this presentation will provide a fresh perspective on how fraud awareness can be embedded into daily operations and why developing a fraud mindset is everyone's responsibility.

Speaker(s) Information

Madison Bailey is a Rotational Program Associate Analyst with HF Sinclair, where she has spent the past year and a half gaining experience across Internal Audit, Accounting, Treasury/Credit & Collections, and FP&A. These cross-functional rotations have provided firsthand exposure to fraud risks, internal controls, and enterprise risk management from multiple business perspectives.

Madison earned both a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting (2023) and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting (2024) from Texas Wesleyan University. She is currently pursuing the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation and has a strong interest in fraud prevention, organizational culture, and fraud awareness.

Throughout her rotational program, Madison has regularly presented findings and recommendations to management and has spoken with accounting students about professional development, internships, and rotational programs. This presentation represents an opportunity to share lessons learned from transitioning from academia to the corporate environment and to encourage organizations to foster a stronger fraud-aware culture.
